This unusual Spirlet revolver has several bells and whistles including a cylinder that is automatically indexed by the ejector rod, an oiler in the butt cap, and a takedown lever on the rear grip strap. Unlike many Belgian manufacturers, Spirlet is known for very high quality guns of which this is one. The overall length is approx. 10.25". The 5 5/8" double stepped octagon 11mm barrel has an excellent bore with bright, deep rifling. The gun retains approx. 95% bright blue with the butt cap faded. The hammer, gate, and trigger are bright and still showing decorative machine turning. The top strap is marked THE A.B.C.C. REVOL. INV AL. SPIRLET PAT SET. 2:72 MARCH 13:75 JAN. 27:77 APRIL 17:77. Al. (Albert?) Spirlet operated in Liege, Belgium, circa 1880. There are star over U proofs on the barrel, frame, and cylinder and the standard Belgian oval ELG proof on the rear of the cylinder. The right side of the barrel is marked No450 and the left frame is marked No478 which is most likely a mistake as they are a single piece. The grips appear to be ebony and are excellent with no cracks or chips. The action functions correctly. A note to the next proud owner: You will be fascinated by the automatic indexing of the cylinder by the ejector rod but may not be able to properly stow the rod after "playing with it." The trick is that the rod end must be pulled out slightly and then turned to allow it to rotate to the stowed position. This wonderful example of an unusual early European center fire revolver is fit for the finest collection.
