Colt 2nd Model Paterson Rifle Texas Contract (AL6986)
Serial number 427. 44 caliber with a 32 1/8” barrel. Nice sharp gun with a n even gray patina throughout metal. The wood is good but does have two repairs on the right hand side of the wrist with wood inserts. The repair is very well done. This is the type of rifle with improved loading lever of which the Army of Republic of Texas purchased late in 1839. This gun is almost definitely a republic of Texas gun as it is the same type and it is in the same serial range of a known Texas contract gun, in fact it is only four serial numbers away. The army of the Republic of Texas purchased 100 Colt 2nd Model Paterson Rifles in 1839. The purchase was made by the Texas General R. G. Dunlap who personally met with John Pearson’s in the Patent Firearms office in New York. This gun is pictured in The Paterson Colt Book by R. L. Wilson several times. Very fine extremely rare Colt 2nd Model Paterson Rifle that is part of the Texas Contract.
