This French Model 1822 pistol was originally a flintlock. It was later altered to percussion and rifled. The overall length is approx. 14". The 7.75" round 69 caliber barrel has a fair bore with moderate pitting and barely visible rifling. The barrel is numbered 4821 forward of the bolster. It features a round post front sight and notched block rear sight. The all metal has a brown patina with the barrel having light pitting from the bolster to the band. The St. Etienne lock markings are barely visible. The barrel tang marking of Mle 182 is readable with the remainder visible but not readable. The brass band, side plate, trigger guard, and butt cap have an even aged patina. The stock is good with a small chip at the front of the lock, age cracks in the grip and to the rear of the lock, vertical stamping of ST ETIENNE followed by TULLE (most likely where it was altered to percussion) followed by 221 followed by a D on the left flat The ramrod is also stamped 221. The swivel ring is present. With the exception that the hammer can be released by a trigger pull at half cock, the action functions correctly. This is a basic French martial pistol.
